Aim:
To conduct a critical Philocine style analysis on the song numbered 2, placed in Part 1 of First Thirumurai placed under the தெய்வ மணி மாலை section in Thiruvarutpa.

Analysis:
In the song numbered 2, Vallalar paints a picture about the various religious inclinations of the 19th century Tamils. His approach is blatantly unbiased. He makes an observation that the Most Prevalent thought process amongst Tamils of the 19th century in Chennai is to believe in the concept of One God (1) ; He generates a list and describes the core concepts of  the various religious schools of thoughts prevalent around him and identifies the domains in which they align together (2) as well as the domains at which they differ. He also describes the attributes of atheists who lived at the time who were not believing in the concept of life beyond earth (3).

Vallalar describes the thought process of the atheists as “Stupidity in thinking” (4) – the attributes of which are showing nil restrain in eating behavior, and getting involved in extravagant dressing habits and practicing sexual promiscuity.

Discussion:
In this song, Saint Vallalar (1823 - 1874) has travelled with an intellect of critical analysis of the various thought process prevalent in the mind of the people living around him. He has assimilated the ideas prevalent in various religious cults and has observed that the concept of oneness of God, had gained the  acceptance of the greater percentile of the population.

Finally in the song Vallalar, seeks the assistance of the super natural power to protect him developing any contact with the atheists, for that could spoil his intellect, he believes. It is interesting to note that Vallalar does not express his willingness to avoid the other religious values, he wishes to avoid only atheism.

Conclusion:
By conducting a Philocine style research on song numbered 2 in chapter 1 in part 1 of Thiruvarutpa, it could be concluded that this song contains inputs related to  the religious inclinations of the 19th century Tamils living in Chennai, and the comprehensive outlook analyzed  by Vallalar in approaching towards his preferred ideology.
